National Diabetes Awareness Month Day 11

Today, was an event with our local JDRF chapter and Medtronic at a children's museum. The coolest part was that the place was closed to the public. It was so neat to be in the museum with other families parenting kids with diabetes.

On any other day, we are usually the only ones with diabetes. So, in the early days of Rocco's diagnosis, I would take him aside to check his blood sugar. I was afraid the speck of blood on his finger would offend someone. Now, I wish I could say that I was that concerned. It has become as routine to us as wiping a teething baby's nose.

Today as I checked him, in the museum, my friend also checked her daughter and I looked up to see another dad checking his son. It made me giggle. I felt like if a disaster suddenly hit, I was with my peeps and we could all collectively keep these kids alive. We probably had enough sugar sources and insulin in our purses and bags to last a year in that museum! I felt safe with these parents that also live my "everyday" life.

Another great part was speaking with two moms. One of the moms has two kids with diabetes (god bless her) and the other mom had just hit the one year mark of her son's diagnosis (& her too!). They both said they read my blog and that they voted for me this morning! I felt flattered and in a large way, I felt connected. It was super neat to know actual people that I may have, in a small way, touched one day. It fueled me to keep going!

I made this for myself last week for motivation! It is simple but effective. I saved it on my phone. Hope it helps you too!

The speaker today was great as well. He had been diagnosed at six and he was thirty-six now.  He explained how the ups and downs of having diabetes stink but don't stop you. That was encouraging. I crave success stories of adults with Type 1. I need the stories to show me he will be ok when I am not with him. I like to hear stories of people's spouses taking care of them. I pray that both of my son's marry kind and loving women but Rocco's will have to have a nursing degree if she wants me to pass on my wedding ring to her!  Lol!

I'd say the best part of the day was when I was talking to the Medtronic reps, one of the nice ladies asked if she could borrow Rocco. I knew it was a room full of safe D-parents and said, "sure!"

On the ride home, Rocco told me he got to say hi to the new girl. She was a little five-year-old girl that had just been diagnosed a week ago. I told him that was an opportunity for him to be a mentor to her. He said, "I know Mom, you taught me that already. That's why I did it." :0)

Here are some pics from the day.

But first, breaking news: Zeke lost his front tooth too! He says he looks like a nerd but I think he's beautiful! I had to pull this one out. Daddy was at work pulling other people's teeth out. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy and when my hubby got home from work, he had a new level of respect from me! Zeke looks peaked in this picture but mommy was a little more peaked. Yikes!

Pretty even.

Hanging tough!

Encouraging example!

While the speaker was speaking, I looked over and saw this. Rocco was using his brother's leg as a footstool to help him tie his shoe. Zeke could care less! Lol!!! This is a perfect example of how twins operate!

My new fav peeps! Thanks ladies for all you do!

Should I hand him over to Medtronic so they can use HIM as their mascot? Nahh... Maybe when he is 13.

Thanks everyone for voting for me for the Top 25 Family Blogs for Circle of Mom! Please, vote "everyday" until November 29, 2012. Some of my friend's even set an alarm on their phones! Thanks guys. Love ya!
