Ideas that worked

typical after school snack if his blood sugar is high
This is the place where I post pictures of things that have worked for us (disclaimer: they may not work for you). But, one of my diabetes' moms suggested I put this on the blog and I think it is genius! We all chase the number and we all crave ANYTHING that will make our lives and our childrens' lives easier! So I will post my favs and everyone would love it if you could post yours. If you don't have a picture to post don't worry, just tell us what your favorite item is and where we can get it. We are all greatful for your intelligent insight!

For the first 3 1/2 years, breakfast was my nemesis! Anything I gave Rocco would send his blood sugar straight to the moon. I tried every cereal, oatmeal, bread, and english muffin on the market. With virtually no insulin in his system, the carbs would rise before the insulin hit him. Then by lunch, he was always in the 300s. I would send him outside to play hard or send him off to play with his twin (if it was too cold outside). Unfortunately, poor Zeke got the brunt of Rocco's high blood sugar behavior. It was so hard to see them struggle all morning. Fits, tantrums and frustration.

I always imagine this feeling to me eating four chocolate cakes then having to sit in a box for four hours.

I even just eliminated all carbs together but the fat in the other non-carb foods ate away at him too. Not as bad so I stuck with that for about 9 months and EVERYONE was sick of greasy breakfasts by the end of that stint.
Blueberry Waffles
But then! Then I found my best friend - The EGGO Nutrigrain Blueberry waffle! I only add a couple of squirts of spray butter and an egg on the side. This breakfast of champions did the trick!! I would check him about two hours into the insulin, low and behold- SUCCESS!! He was always in the 100's!!! He didn't yell at Zeke anymore! He didn't cry. Our mornings ran so much more smoothly. Thank you Kelloggs!

I hope if you try these little gems, your child loves them too! What is your choice for the perfect breakfast?

So far, Apidra (a type of insulin) has been catching Rocco's high blood sugars before they get too high and we have only had one real low (39) in the past week! But, I dosed him too much for that low. Exciting! Ask your doc about it and read up on it.

I highly recommend a cell phone for your little ones. For us it has become a little lifeline! For details please read the Chuck E. Cheese post. There are so many carb counting apps and blood sugar apps that the kids can use once they understand them. You can text pictures of food and also use the calculator to divide serving sizes. I highly recommend getting them one. The free ones work great!

Try Land O' Lakes Cinnamon Sugar butter! It's only 4 carbs per Tablespoon. Great alternative to syrups or jellies!

When you talk about eggos and difficulty finding toppings, I thought I'd share a product we found and love. We buy Walden Farms Pancake Syrup. It is completely carb free! And beleive it or not, it really tastes great! We order online, and I am not sure if its available in stores or not. I've never seen it. They have lots of other great products, we have tried many of them, each and every one has zero carbs! It was a great find. I (or rather my 3yr old) recommends the pancake syrup, chocolate dip, & caramel dip.

Love your blog!

Thank you so much for this advice on breakfast! I found out I was a diabetic on my 29th birthday and they had been treating me as a type 2, even though I've always eaten healthy, never ate fast food, was active, never drank sweet drinks, and have never been overweight. Well, after having high ketones and blood sugar levels, and getting frustrated with the doctor who didn't care at all, I decided to go to an endocrinologist. And well, she thinks I'm probably type 1. I'm now off of oral meds and on Apidra and then Lantus at night. My levels are better, although sometimes they go from 120 before breakfast to 250 then back down to 50 in 3 hours. But we are starting to find that medium. Anyway, thanks for the eggo idea...also Cary's sugar free syrup is really good!

Hi guys, I wanted to share this blog post here since we all love Eggo Nutrigrain Waffles. These kind worked for us too! Just go to "search this blog" and type in pumpkin. It will come up that way. Sorry, I can't attach it. Stupid Apple product has a glitch. The new Fall waffles are so yummy and didn't spike Rocco's morning blood sugar.

Whenever my daughter eats something with tons of sugar ie syrups cupcakes etc. We just bolus 15 -25 minutes before she eats it. Depending on what her numbers are to start with. That way her blood sugars do not spike high and she doesn't feel icky. We do this for all her meals but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Love your site and all your heartfelt stories.... Had me in happy tears.
